Mary Louise VanNatta Receives Fire Chief’s Award for Exemplary Service

At the May 7, 2026, Salem Fire Foundation Breakfast at the Willamette Heritage Center, Mary Louise VanNatta was recognized with the Salem Fire Department’s Fire Chief’s Award for Exemplary Service. The award was presented by Fire Chief David Gerboth in appreciation of VanNatta’s 11 years of service and leadership as the executive director of the Salem Fire Foundation.

The recognition came as a surprise to VanNatta, who has long worked behind the scenes to advance the Foundation’s mission of supporting firefighter readiness and community safety. During her tenure, she played a key role in expanding the Foundation’s lifesaving education efforts, overseeing the training program of more than 35,000 Salem-Keizer students in CPR and AED use. She also helped raise funds and guide the placement of hundreds of automated external defibrillators throughout Salem and surrounding communities, significantly increasing public access to lifesaving equipment.

In presenting the award, Chief Gerboth highlighted VanNatta’s steady commitment, community focus, and the lasting impact of her work, noting that her efforts have helped save lives and strengthen the connection between the Salem Fire Department and the community it serves.

VanNatta, clearly moved by the moment, shared her gratitude following the presentation:

“I was truly caught off guard and deeply honored. The work of the Salem Fire Foundation has always been about supporting people who put others first every single day. Being recognized by Chief Gerboth and the Salem Fire Department and the Foundation means more to me than I can express. I am grateful to have worked alongside such dedicated firefighters, volunteers, and community partners, and I share this recognition with all of them.”

VanNatta recently concluded her tenure as the Salem Fire Foundation’s executive director, leaving behind a strong and lasting legacy rooted in prevention, education, and community partnership. Her work continues to be reflected in the lives saved, the people trained, and the resources now in place throughout Salem and the surrounding region.

The Fire Chief’s Award for Exemplary Service recognizes individuals whose sustained contributions help advance the Salem Fire Department’s mission and values. VanNatta’s years of service reflect a strong belief in prevention, education, and community partnership.
